Making a T-shirt Workshop

Ever wondered how t-shirts are made in our screen printing studio?  We will show you the step by step process during this interactive workshop experience.  From burning a screen in our darkroom to printing your own cool t-shirt to wear home the same day, try screen printing for a day! Each participant will get to choose either a t-shirt or a bag to print.

Laser 101 Class

Dates: November 2, 9, 16

Time: 10:30-1:30pm

Cost: $20 for members, $90 for non-members

The laser cutter is the maker’s dream tool. With it you can cut or engrave a great variety of materials including wood, paper, fabric, leather, craft foam, stone, tile, glass, cork, and acrylic. In this introductory class you’ll learn how to create and prep graphics for the Hub’s lasers using free software, how to operate the machines safely, and where to find additional resources to further your creating with the laser cutter. Either the Vector Workshop or prior experience using graphics software is a prerequisite. Students must attend all three three-hour class sessions to operate the Hub’s lasers. (Those with prior laser experience may ask to be tested out of this class.)

Holiday Card Design Class

CNC 102: Learning CNC Basics on the Shapeoko

Dates: November 4, 11, 18, 25

Time: 5:30-7:30pm

Prerequisite: CNC 101 or proficiency with Vectric VCarve Pro software.

In this class, you will put your new Vectric VCarve Pro skills to the test as we learn to machine our designs using the Shapeoko CNC routers. Students will learn how to set up the CNC, secure stock material, select bits, and use a controller to send their files to the machine. Projects will include making a valet tray and a box.

Intro to Pottery

Dates: November 5,12,19,26

Time: 6:00-8:00pm

Learn to start working with clay in our ceramics studio. This class will introduce students to basic hand building techniques–pinch, coil, and slab and how to use glazes in our studio to decorate and finish their pieces for firings in our kiln. There will also be an introduction to the basics of getting started on the potter’s wheel– then it’s up to you to put in your 10,000 hours to master it! Join the Innovation Hub today to get the most out of our pottery studio, allowing you to practice your new skills on your own time.

Clay costs $40 per 25 bag and is not included in the class fee.

In order to accommodate busy schedules, we are offering a new class style that requires no long-term commitment. Come for one class or as often as you can make it. Each session will include a demo on pottery techniques attendees are interested in learning. Beginner through advanced levels are welcome to attend. Each night participants can choose up to 2 items to paint with underglaze and have fired in our kiln.

Cost includes clay and firing for up to 2 pieces per person.

Welding Class 101

Dates: November 6,13,20, December 4

Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm

This class is set up to allow the individual the opportunity to learn about welding and if it’s something they might enjoy perusing further. We will learn the basics of welding in this class using the MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and Stick welding process. You can choose to focus on both or one of the processes we offer. This is a hands on class and the goal is for students to be completing proficient weld joints by the end of week 4.

Intro to Metals and Jewelry with Guest Artist Myriam Saavedra

Interested in learning the knitty gritty basics of jewelry fabrication and design? Perfect for beginners, this class will introduce students to the use of hand tools to create their own jewelry pieces using cold connections. Each class will go over a new technique with practice samples as students design and execute their final pieces by the end of the session.

Packing & Shipping for Etsy

Date: Monday, November 11

Time: 3:30-5:30pm

Bring an item from your shop to this Etsy workshop. We’ll provide packing supplies to practice packaging your products securely for shipping. We’ll also talk branding your shop through packaging and hear ideas from other makers that you can use to create your packing style. We’ll use the finished packages to find out how much it would cost to ship items and talk pricing your Etsy shop listings.

3D Printing Workshop

Date: Wednesday, November 13

Time: 6:30-8:00pm

Learn to use the 3D printers! It starts with where to find 3D Models so we introduce you to Thingiverse. From there we talk about Cura the program to prepare those 3D Models. Next you will learn how to load filament, lay out jobs, and basic troubleshooting for when your prints decide to fail spectacularly.

Block Printing on Fabric Workshop

Dates: Saturday, November 23

Time: 10:30-12:30pm

Cost: $20 for members, $40 for non-members

Carve blocks, stamps, and use natural objects to block print your own designs on fabric. These techniques will be great for designing and making your own gifts and decorations for the holidays. Some fabric items will be provided, but bring your own cotton fabric and items to try out, as well.

Saw-tastic Workshop

This workshop will cover basic wood shop safety as well as basic tool training. We will focus on how to safely operate a table saw, miter saw, and band saw. We will also cover their uses and how to know which tool is best for the job! This workshop is perfect for first time woodworkers.

Vector Workshop

Bring your own computer if possible. This is an introduction to creating vector art in Inkscape. These scalable designs can be used as logos for business or websites, but more importantly they are used in conjunction with the laser cutters, CNC routers, and silk screening to make some of the coolest things to come out of the Hub. This workshop is a prerequisite for our laser class, screen printing, and several other classes at the Hub!

Basic Pen Turning Workshop with the Diamond State Woodturners

In this workshop we will detail the basic steps for the preparation, turning and finishing of a slimline pen. You will begin with a blank piece of wood and leave with a stylish ballpoint pen that is yours to take with you. Each participant will have access to an individual lathe, appropriate safety equipment, necessary turning tools and an experienced mentor in constant attendance. Success with safety are the primary concerns of the instructor and assistants.

Pottery Wheel Throwing Workshop

Want to learn wheel throwing? This fun workshop will walk you through how to get started on the pottery wheels in our ceramics studio. In this 2 hour introduction to the pottery wheel, you will learn basic steps to center clay on the potter’s wheel and begin making pottery forms. It takes lots of practice to master the techniques! Become a member today if you want access to our studio to keep practicing on your own schedule. This workshop includes the cost of clay so just bring yourself and come ready to get messy (because we are 99% sure you will). There will be the option to have up to 2 small pieces fired in our kiln, and pieces will be ready by mid January.

Intro to Arduino

In this workshop, you will get hands-on experience working with the Arduino program which is an open-source platform used for building electronics projects. You will also receive an Arduino microcontroller which is an open hardware development board that can be used by tinkerers, hobbyists, and makers to design and build devices that interact with the real world. We will also discuss the many project possibilities that exist and help you get off to a good start with your own Arduino based projects! All ages are welcome as participants, but youth under 15 should attend with an adult.

If you have to cancel your upcoming class, workshop, field trip or summer camp registration refunds will be given as follows: Cancellations made 30 days or more in advance of the event date will receive a 100% refund, cancellations made 15-30 days in advance of the event date will receive a 50% refund, cancellations made 0-14 days within the event date will not receive any type of refund.
