Vector Workshop

Bring your own computer if possible. This is an introduction to creating vector art in Inkscape. These scalable designs can be used as logos for business or websites, but more importantly, they are used in conjunction with the laser cutters, CNC routers, and silk screening to make some of the coolest things to come out of the Hub. This workshop is a prerequisite for our laser class and several other classes at the Hub!  Please download the free Inkscape software before coming to this workshop.

Making a T-shirt Workshop

Ever wondered how t-shirts are made in our screen printing studio?  We will show you the step by step process during this interactive workshop experience.  From burning a screen in our darkroom to printing your own cool t-shirt to wear home the same day, try screen printing for a day! Each participant will get to choose either a t-shirt or a bag to print.

This workshop will cover basic woodshop safety as well as basic tool training. We will focus on how to safely operate a table saw, miter saw, and band saw. We will also cover their uses and how to know which tool is best for the job! This workshop is perfect for first-time woodworkers.

3D Printing Workshop

Cost: Free for members, $20 for non-members

Pottery Making Valentine's Day Workshop

Looking for a unique way to celebrate Valentine’s day? Join us in creating a beautiful pair of simple cups with your loved one! You can personalize them with stamps, texture, and color.  We’ll fire them in our kiln so they will be functional for shared memories over coffee, wine, and tea for years to come. Drinks, snacks and chocolate goodies will be available as you spend your Valentine evening at the Innovation Hub!

Laser Class 101

Learn to use the Maker’s dream tool to cut, etch and mark intricate, detailed graphics on wood and create 3D objects. In this introductory class, you’ll learn how to: create and prep files for the laser, perform routine maintenance and safety practices, unleash your imagination with free graphics software, create simple, yet elegant projects like wooden coasters, etched pub glasses, wooden boxes, leather bracelets, paper invitations, linoleum or wood block stamps.

Pottery Making: Coil Building

Start working with clay or join our community in this ceramics hand-building class that focuses on a versatile ceramic technique–coil building.  Coil building can be used to create cups, vases, and even figurative sculptures. With this simple technique, you can start making anything in clay.

Leathercraft 101

Leatherworking 101: I. Tools

This class is all about learning about the tools of the trade! We will go over several of the tools leather artisans use every day, such as how to set a rivet and a button-snap. Each student will be able to have hands-on experience with the tools and will leave with a leather cuff bracelet they create using some of the skills learned in the course. Materials will be provided by the professor.

This class covers the various stitches used in the leathercrafting community and ateliers around the globe. This is the heart of leatherwork. If you learn to stitch and practice often, you will surprise yourself at what you can turn out. Stitching is at the top of the most defining qualities possessed by master craftsmen/artisans.

There will be a brief presentation on many of the different kind of stitches, decorative and otherwise. Each student will be able to have hands-on experience with the traditional saddle stitch, with an awl for a lockstitch and have a brief introduction to an industrial sewing machine. Each student will leave with a leather card-wallet they stitch together using some of the skills learned in the course. Materials will be provided by the professor.

Leatherworking 101: III. Dyeing & Finishing

Date: Wednesday, February 20

Time: 5:30-7:30pm

Cost: $25 for members, $50 for non-members

This class covers the various dyeing and staining methods used in the leathercrafting community as well as finishes, edge burnishing and edge sealing. There will also be a brief dialogue about the different kind of leathers in the market and how dyes and stains affect them differently. This course can get a bit messy so come in clothes you don’t mind getting a little. . . colorful.

Each student will be able to have hands-on experience dying leather and sealing it as well as edge burnishing and coating an edge. Each student will leave with a leather key chain they create using some of the skills learned in the course. Materials will be provided by the professor.

Leatherworking 101: IV. Form & Function

This class is set up as an interactive lecture where we will be going over the basics of bag physics, layering, lining, and creating depth. There will be a demonstration on creating depth in a mock-up utilizing a technique often seen in tote designs. Each student will be able to try their hand at making a miniature mock-up of their own using gussets. They will be able to take this home so that they can use it as a model for their own works. Materials will be provided by the professor.

Jessie Hornbrook is an Assistant Professor of Art at University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

If you have ever wondered how artists like Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg create their iconic imagery, this is the workshop for you. Jessie will demonstrate how to make one-of-a-kind multi-layered art works using appropriated imagery with the techniques of monoprint and silkscreen that can be done both at home and in the studio.

Fees go to the cost of materials and to benefit the Innovation Hub’s Printmaking Art Equipment and Materials Development Fund.

Welding Class 101

Date: Thursdays, March 7, March 14, March 21, and March 28

Time: 5:30-7:30pm

This class is set up to allow the individual the opportunity to learn about welding and if it’s something they might enjoy perusing further. We will learn the basics of welding in this class using the MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and Stick welding process. You can choose to focus on both or one of the processes we offer. This is a hands on class and the goal is for students to be completing proficient weld joints by the end of week 4.

CNC Routers 101: From CAD to CAM with VCarve Pro

Date: Mondays, March 4, March 11, March 18, and March 25

In this introductory 4-week class you’ll learn about CNC routers and the kinds of projects you can create with them. CNCs can be used with a variety of different materials to create unique pieces, perfect fit marquetry and inlays, and repeatable products using 2D and 2.5D design.

We’ll hone in on how to use Vectric VCarve Pro, the premier software for working with any CNC Router and provide you with a Makerspace license for your computer so that you can work on your files away from the Hub.

Screen Printing 101

Date: Mondays, March 4, March 11, March 18, March 25, April 1, and April 8

Time: 6:00-8:00pm

This class will focus on the digital and technical process of screen printing. It is the perfect class to take if you are itching to make your own shirts and you want to become a certified user of our screen printing studio. You will learn some basic tools in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to turn logos, drawings, or ideas into printable 1 color designs.

Next, learn how to take your one color designs and print them onto cotton based fabrics and paper. You will learn every step of the process so that you can design and print on your own at the Hub. Here’s what we’ll cover: emulsifying and burning designs onto screens, plastisol ink use, printing on apparel and paper, names and uses of basic equipment in the studio, names and uses of inks and cleaning products in our studio.

This class focuses on the software skills and techniques needed to successfully design your projects and set them up for machining. Demonstrations of the equipment will be shown, but hands-on projects are reserved for follow-up classes and workshops. We will design projects that you can machine in CNC Routers 102: Hands-on with the Shapeoko.

Handle Pulling Class

Date: Mondays, March 4, March 11, March 18, and March 25

Handles are one of the most important aspects of functional pottery. This class will focus on designing and making clay handles for pottery forms. Pulling and attaching handles can make you want to pull your hair out, OR it could be your favorite part of the pottery making process! Hannah May will show you methods she uses to create handles for different sizes and shapes. Students should have some previous hand building or wheel throwing experience to make forms they want to put handles on- it will take some practice but it is worth it!
