Vector Workshop

Bring your own computer if possible. This is an introduction to creating vector art in Inkscape. These scalable designs can be used as logos for business or websites, but more importantly they are used in conjunction with the laser cutters, CNC routers, and silk screening to make some of the coolest things to come out of the Hub. This workshop is a prerequisite for our laser class, screen printing, and several other classes at the Hub!

3D Printing Workshop

Date: Wednesday, February 12

Time: 6:00-8:00pm

Learn to use the 3D printers! It starts with where to find 3D Models so we introduce you to Thingiverse. From there we talk about Cura the program to prepare those 3D Models. Next you will learn how to load filament, lay out jobs, and basic troubleshooting for when your prints decide to fail spectacularly.

Making a T-shirt Workshop

Ever wondered how t-shirts are made in our screen printing studio? We will show you the step by step process during this interactive workshop experience. From burning a screen in our darkroom to printing your own cool t-shirt to wear home the same day, try screen printing for a day! Each participant will get to choose either a t-shirt or a bag to print.

Valentine's Pottery

Date: Thursday, February 13

Dreaming of a pottery date night? Celebrate Valentine’s day with a loved one by making pottery together. Each person will handbuild a mug or other small piece and paint it during an evening of wine and making. Our experienced ceramics educator will walk you through how to create your own pottery pieces to be fired in our kiln. Finished pieces are typically ready within 6 weeks.

Intro to Metals & Jewelry

Interested in learning the knitty gritty basics of jewelry fabrication and design? Perfect for beginners, this class will introduce students to the use of hand tools to create their own jewelry pieces using cold connections. Each class will go over a new technique with practice samples as students design and execute their final pieces by the end of the session.

Laser 101

Dates: February 8, 15, and 22

Time: 10:30am-1:30pm

The laser cutter is the maker’s dream tool. With it you can cut or engrave a great variety of materials including wood, paper, fabric, leather, craft foam, stone, tile, glass, cork, and acrylic. In this introductory class you’ll learn how to create and prep graphics for the Hub’s lasers using free software, how to operate the machines safely, and where to find additional resources to further your creating with the laser cutter. Either the Vector Workshop or prior experience using graphics software is a prerequisite. Students must attend all three three-hour class sessions to operate the Hub’s lasers. (Those with prior laser experience may ask to be tested out of this class.)

Saw-tastic Workshop

Date: Thursday, February 20

This workshop will cover basic wood shop safety as well as basic tool training. We will focus on how to safely operate a table saw, miter saw, and band saw. We will also cover their uses and how to know which tool is best for the job! This workshop is perfect for first time woodworkers.

Open Studio: Pottery

In order to accommodate busy schedules, we are offering a class style that requires no long-term commitment. Come for one class or as often as you can make it. Each session will include a demo on pottery techniques attendees are interested in learning. Beginner through advanced levels are welcome to attend. Each night participants can choose up to 2 items to paint with underglaze and have fired in our kiln. Cost includes clay and firing for up to 2 pieces per person. *Wheel throwing is available only to participants who have taken taken a class or workshop involving wheel throwing.

Basic Pen Turning Workshop

In this workshop we will detail the basic steps for the preparation, turning and finishing of a slimline pen. You will begin with a blank piece of wood and leave with a stylish ballpoint pen that is yours to take with you. Each participant will have access to an individual lathe, appropriate safety equipment, necessary turning tools and an experienced mentor in constant attendance. Success with safety are the primary concerns of the instructor and assistants.

Welding Class 101 (Day)

Dates: February 4, 11, 18, and 25

We will learn the basics of welding in this class using the MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and Stick welding process. You can choose to focus on both or one of the processes we offer. This is a hands on class and the goal is for students to be completing proficient weld joints by the end of week 4.

Screen Printing 102: Darkroom Training

Learn the nitty-gritty, behind the scenes process of reclaiming screens, emulsifying screens, and burning designs onto screens. Our intro workshops and screen printing 101 class include an overview of the darkroom, but this workshop will allow you to practice techniques correctly and take our darkroom assessment. This workshop is a requirement to start preparing screens on your own in our darkroom.

Multi-color Screen Printing

This class will focus on the technical process of screen printing. It is the perfect class to take if you are itching to make your own shirts and you want to become a certified user of our screen printing studio. Learn how to take your one color designs and print them onto cotton based fabrics and paper. You will learn every step of the process so that you can design and print on your own at the Hub. Here’s what we’ll cover: emulsifying and burning designs onto screens, plastisol ink use, printing on apparel and paper, names and uses of basic equipment in the studio, names and uses of inks and cleaning products in our studio.

Wheel Throwing 101: Centering on the Potter's Wheel

Dates: Thursday, March 26

Want to learn wheel throwing? This fun workshop will walk you through how to get started on the pottery wheels in our ceramics studio. In this 2 hour introduction to the pottery wheel, you will learn basic steps to center clay on the potter’s wheel and begin making pottery forms. It takes lots of practice to master the techniques! Become a member today if you want access to our studio to keep practicing on your own schedule. This workshop includes the cost of clay so just bring yourself and come ready to get messy (because we are 99% sure you will). **There will be the option to have up to 2 small pieces fired in our kiln, and pieces will be ready in 4-6 weeks.

Make your own Pottery Planter

Plant parenting is even more exciting with handmade planter pots! We’ll show you how to make your own in this pottery workshop. A professional potter and plant parent will take you step-by-step through the process of making and decorating your very own planter. **Fired planters will be ready for pick up in mid-April so you can start your spring planting. Design a Sign Workshop

Dates: Thursday, March 19

We will using screen like transfers to create your own wood sign, picture or wall hanging using refurbished wood cabinet door fronts. You will be able to choose from a variety of designs that the instructor will provide. Your instructor will guide you through the process of preparing the wood surface, using the transfers and applying the paste. All supplies for the workshop are included in the fee. No previous art experience required. Depending on the detail of your custom sign expect the class to be from 1- 2.5 hours.

Students will get an introduction to welding and basic steel fabrication skills. Curriculum covers the equipment, personal safety, proper set up and shut down procedures, and welding techniques for each process available. Students have time to practice welding with guidance from the teacher. Upon completion of this class, students will know how to successfully weld ferrous metal using a number of welding processes and finishing techniques. We will go over MIG Welding (GMAW), Stick Welding (SMAW), Flux-Core Welding (FCAW), and Oxy-acetylene Cutting Torch. Students should wear closed-toed shoes, preferably leather, and long pants.

Twisted Handles Welding Workshop

Date: Saturday, March 14

Time: 9:00am – 5:00pm (with a lunch break from 1-2pm)

Students will make a simple twisted steel handle of their own design. We will use the oxy/acetylene torch to twist square-stock, the bandsaw and drill press to fabricate the brackets and the GMAW process to weld them to brackets. Curriculum will cover proper equipment and personal safety, proper set up and shut down procedures, and GMAW welding techniques. Upon completion of this class, students will have learned how to successfully use equipment to bend, weld, and finish a twisted handle. Students should wear closed-toed shoes, preferably leather, and long denim pants. Students with some experience preferred but not required.

You may cancel by phone or by sending an email to sales@arhub.org. If you have to cancel your upcoming class, workshop, field trip or summer camp registration refunds will be given as follows: Cancellations made 30 days or more in advance of the event date will receive a 100% refund, cancellations made 15-30 days in advance of the event date will receive a 50% refund, cancellations made 0-14 days within the event date will not receive any type of refund.
