CNC 103: Large Projects on the EZ Router

Ever wondered how t-shirts are made in our screen printing studio?  We will show you the step by step process during this interactive workshop experience.  From burning a screen in our darkroom to printing your own cool t-shirt to wear home the same day, try screen printing for a day! 3D Printing Workshop

Learn to use the 3D printers! It starts with an introduction to Mesh Mixer and Thingiverse; next you will learn how to load filament, lay out jobs, and basic troubleshooting for when your prints decide to fail spectacularly.  

Intro to Pottery

Learn to start working with clay in our ceramics studio. This class will introduce students to basic hand building techniques–pinch, coil, and slab and how to use glazes in our studio to decorate and finish their pieces for firings in our kiln. There will also be an introduction to the basics of getting started on the potter’s wheel– then it’s up to you to put in your 10,000 hours to master it! Join the Innovation Hub today to get the most out of our pottery studio, allowing you to practice your new skills on your own time.

Clay costs $40 per 25 bag and is not included in the class fee.

Welding Class 101

Dates: October 2, 9, 16, 23

Time: 5:30-7:30pm

This class is set up to allow the individual the opportunity to learn about welding and if it’s something they might enjoy perusing further. We will learn the basics of welding in this class using the MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and Stick welding process. You can choose to focus on both or one of the processes we offer. This is a hands on class and the goal is for students to be completing proficient weld joints by the end of week 4.

One-Color Screen Printing

Dates: October 3, 10, 17, 24th

This class will focus on the technical process of screen printing. It is the perfect class to take if you are itching to make your own shirts and you want to become a certified user of our screen printing studio. Learn how to take your one color designs and print them onto cotton based fabrics and paper. You will learn every step of the process so that you can design and print on your own at the Hub. Here’s what we’ll cover: emulsifying and burning designs onto screens, plastisol ink use, printing on apparel and paper, names and uses of basic equipment in the studio, names and uses of inks and cleaning products in our studio.

Laser 101 Class

The laser cutter is the maker’s dream tool. With it you can cut or engrave a great variety of materials including wood, paper, fabric, leather, craft foam, stone, tile, glass, cork, and acrylic. In this introductory class you’ll learn how to create and prep graphics for the Hub’s lasers using free software, how to operate the machines safely, and where to find additional resources to further your creating with the laser cutter. Either the Vector Workshop or prior experience using graphics software is a prerequisite. Students must attend all three three-hour class sessions to operate the Hub’s lasers. (Those with prior laser experience may ask to be tested out of this class.)

Photographing for Etsy

Date: Monday, October 7

Learn to photograph your products, art, and handmade items for Etsy. You will learn tips for photographing pieces, setting up a photo area at home, and best practices for showcasing your pieces to potential buyers using your Etsy photos. Our round table discussion with a community of Etsy sellers will provide you with feedback and ideas to start listing your items on Etsy.

CNC Routers 101: Learn CAD with VCarve Pro

Dates: October 7, 14, 21

In this introductory 3 week class you’ll learn about CNC routers and the types of projects you can create with them. We’ll hone in on how to use Vectric VCarve Pro, the premier software for working with any CNC Router and provide you with a Makerspace license for your computer so that you can work on your files away from the Hub. We will cover all of the features of this software, which can handle 2D to 3D design.

Intro to Relief Printmaking

Dates: October 5, 12, 19, 26

Time: 1:00pm-3:00pm

Learn to make relief printed artwork by carving and inking linoleum and wood blocks. In this class you will draw designs to be carved, inked, and printed, while learning tools, techniques, and ideas for each. Print your finished artwork by hand or using the Hub’s press. Materials are provided. All levels welcome.

In order to accommodate busy schedules, we are offering a new class style that requires no long-term commitment. Come for one class or as often as you can make it. Each session will include a demo on pottery techniques attendees are interested in learning. Beginner through advanced levels are welcome to attend. These scalable designs can be used as logos for business or websites, but more importantly they are used in conjunction with the laser cutters, CNC routers, and silk screening to make some of the coolest things to come out of the Hub. This workshop is a prerequisite for our laser class and several other classes at the Hub!

Typography Workshop with Guest Artist Natalie Richie

Come and learn the basics of typography and typographic systems used in design. Type can be used to further convey an aesthetic as well as a message in print design. Album covers, magazines and books all use typography to create a recognizable brand. No experience necessary, students will be introduced to the principles of design while using typeface, weight, and size to create contrast their work using illustrator and photoshop. Students may bring their laptop and please bring headphones, flash drive, sketchbook and pencil.

In this class, you will put your new Vectric VCarve Pro skills to the test as we learn to machine our designs using the Shapeoko CNC routers. Students will learn how to set up the CNC, secure stock material, select bits, and use a controller to send their files to the machine. Projects will include making a valet tray and a box.

Bring an item from your shop to this Etsy workshop. We’ll provide packing supplies to practice packaging your products securely for shipping. We’ll also talk branding your shop through packaging and hear ideas from other makers that you can use to create your packing style. We’ll use the finished packages to find out how much it would cost to ship items and talk pricing your Etsy shop listings.

Basic Pen Turning Workshop with the Diamond State Woodturners

Date: Saturday, November 2

Time: 12:00-4:00pm

In this workshop we will detail the basic steps for the preparation, turning and finishing of a slimline pen. You will begin with a blank piece of wood and leave with a stylish ballpoint pen that is yours to take with you. Each participant will have access to an individual lathe, appropriate safety equipment, necessary turning tools and an experienced mentor in constant attendance. Success with safety are the primary concerns of the instructor and assistants.  

Due to the diverse number of classes, workshops, summer camps and field trips we offer, we have created a cancellation policy that gives us an opportunity to fill our schedule. If you have to cancel your upcoming class, workshop, field trip or summer camp registration refunds will be given as follows: Cancellations made 30 days or more in advance of the event date will receive a 100% refund, cancellations made 15-30 days in advance of the event date will receive a 50% refund, cancellations made 0-14 days within the event date will not receive any type of refund.
