Vector Workshop

Start here! This is a recommended workshop for nearly everyone looking to learn something at the Innovation Hub. You will learn about what vector design is, why you should learn it, and how to design on your own computer using the free downloadable program, Inkscape. So what are vectors, exactly? They are scalable designs that can be used as logos for business or websites, but more importantly they are used in conjunction with the laser cutters, CNC routers, and screen printing to make some of the coolest things to come out of the Hub. This workshop is a prerequisite for our laser class, screen printing, and several other classes at the Hub! Bring your own computer, if possible.

Making a T-shirt Workshop

Date: Saturday, March 7

Time: 10:30am-12:30pm

Ever wondered how t-shirts are made in our screen printing studio? We will show you the step by step process during this interactive workshop experience. From burning a screen in our darkroom to printing your own cool t-shirt to wear home the same day, try screen printing for a day! Each participant will get to choose either a t-shirt or a bag to print.

Open Studio: Pottery

Dates: March 5 and 19

In order to accommodate busy schedules, we are offering a class style that requires no long-term commitment. Come for one class or as often as you can make it. Each session will include a demo on pottery techniques attendees are interested in learning. Beginner through advanced levels are welcome to attend. Each night participants can choose up to 2 items to paint with underglaze and have fired in our kiln. Cost includes clay and firing for up to 2 pieces per person.

Wheel Throwing 101: Centering on the Potter's Wheel

Dates: Thursday, March 26

Want to learn wheel throwing? This fun workshop will walk you through how to get started on the pottery wheels in our ceramics studio. In this 2 hour introduction to the pottery wheel, you will learn basic steps to center clay on the potter’s wheel and begin making pottery forms. It takes lots of practice to master the techniques! Become a member today if you want access to our studio to keep practicing on your own schedule. This workshop includes the cost of clay so just bring yourself and come ready to get messy (because we are 99% sure you will). **There will be the option to have up to 2 small pieces fired in our kiln, and pieces will be ready in 4-6 weeks.

Make your own Pottery Planter

Dates: Thursday, March 12

Plant parenting is even more exciting with handmade planter pots! We’ll show you how to make your own in this pottery workshop. A professional potter and plant parent will take you step-by-step through the process of making and decorating your very own planter. **Fired planters will be ready for pick up in mid-April so you can start your spring planting. This fee does not include plants.

Design a Sign Workshop

Dates: Thursday, March 19

We will using screen like transfers to create your own wood sign, picture or wall hanging using refurbished wood cabinet door fronts. You will be able to choose from a variety of designs that the instructor will provide. Your instructor will guide you through the process of preparing the wood surface, using the transfers and applying the paste. All supplies for the workshop are included in the fee. No previous art experience required. Depending on the detail of your custom sign expect the class to be from 1- 2.5 hours.

Intro to Photoshop

Date: Monday, March 16

In this workshop, you will learn basics of photo editing using Adobe photoshop. Learn from a professional graphic designer how to navaigate some basic tools and do basic editing within this powerful photo editing program that can be used in combination with vector design to create amazing projects with laser cutting and screen printing.

Basic Pen Turning workshop

In this workshop we will detail the basic steps for the preparation, turning and finishing of a slimline pen. You will begin with a blank piece of wood and leave with a stylish ballpoint pen that is yours to take with you. Each participant will have access to an individual lathe, appropriate safety equipment, necessary turning tools and an experienced mentor in constant attendance. Success with safety are the primary concerns of the instructor and assistants.

Open Studio: Wood Working

3D Printing Workshop

Learn to use the 3D printers! It starts with where to find 3D Models so we introduce you to Thingiverse. From there we talk about Cura the program to prepare those 3D Models. Next you will learn how to load filament, lay out jobs, and basic troubleshooting for when your prints decide to fail spectacularly.

Welding 101

Dates: March 10, 17, 24, and 31

This class is set up to allow the individual the opportunity to learn about welding and if it’s something they might enjoy pursuing further. Students will learn the basics of welding in this class using MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and Stick welding process. You can choose to focus on both or one of the processes we offer. This is a hands on class and the goal is for students to be completing proficient weld joints by the end of week 4.

Students will get an introduction to welding and basic steel fabrication skills. Curriculum covers the equipment, personal safety, proper set up and shut down procedures, and welding techniques for each process available. Students have time to practice welding with guidance from the teacher. Upon completion of this class, students will know how to successfully weld ferrous metal using a number of welding processes and finishing techniques. We will go over MIG Welding (GMAW), Stick Welding (SMAW), Flux-Core Welding (FCAW), and Oxy-acetylene Cutting Torch. Students should wear closed-toed shoes, preferably leather, and long pants.

Perfect for beginners, this class will introduce students to the use of hand tools to create their own jewelry pieces using cold connections. Want to learn how to trim your wheel thrown pottery pieces? This is an introductory trimming class for beginning wheel throwers, who have learned the basics of centering and throwing on the potter’s wheel. In this 2 day class, students will learn pottery wheel throwing and trimming techniques that can be used to create a variety of forms out of clay. In the first class, students will center and throw pottery bowls and cups. Students will then learn about clay management and how to cover pots to keep them from fully drying out so that they can be trimmed and decorated. This 2 day class will prepare you to start using our studio on your own time. Become a member today if you want access to our studio to keep practicing on your own schedule. This workshop includes the cost of clay so just bring yourself and come ready to get messy (because we are 99% sure you will).

Fired pottery pieces will be ready in 4-6 weeks.

CNC 101: VCarve & Shapeoko

Students will learn the ins and outs of the VCarve software while also learning basic setup for running the Shapeoko machines. 3D Printing 103: SLA Printers

Laser Cutting 101

The laser cutter is the maker’s dream tool. With it you can cut or engrave a great variety of materials including wood, paper, fabric, leather, craft foam, stone, tile, glass, cork, and acrylic. In this introductory class you’ll learn how to create and prep graphics for the Hub’s lasers using free software, how to operate the machines safely, and where to find additional resources to further your creating with the laser cutter. Either the Vector Workshop or prior experience using graphics software is a prerequisite. Students must attend all three three-hour class sessions to operate the Hub’s lasers. (Those with prior laser experience may ask to be tested out of this class.)
