EV 3 Robotics Workshop

Day and time: Saturday 10:30am-12:30pm

Date:  4/14, 4/28

Cost: $25

Ages: 8-13

Prerequisite Required: You will need access to a Lego Mindstorms set to construct and program. Either the “home” or “educational” set will work and an expansion kit is helpful, but not required. You will also need a windows-based computer with the free EV3 programming software, which we will install it at the first meeting if you don’t have it. Other things to bring would include a lab notebook, pencils, a straight-edge (ruler) and most importantly, your imagination.

Lego® Mindstorms® EV3 consist of all the components necessary to design, build, program and run your very own robot capable of performing a number of tasks. The First Lego League® (“FLL”) uses the EV3 system as part of their annual “Robot Games” competition for children from 8 to 13 years old. While there is tremendous enthusiasm for FLL in the Central Arkansas area and beyond, building and programming a robot can be intimidating. We intend to fix that.

This class is intended to teach you how to use the EV3 software in ways you could not imagine. We will start with the basics; how to get your robot to move and turn. We will then discuss the various sensors to detect light, distance, touch and how to use them to help your bot drive “true” (that’s engineer speak for “straight”), turn accurately and do what you want it to do every time.

The class will be taught with the FLL robot and missions in mind, but anyone wanting to learn how to program Lego EV3 software is welcome. Members from teams are encouraged attend and work together.
